John H. Wood claimed that Nathan Neely illegally detained an enslaved boy of 5 years old named Samson, "Sam," worth $700. Wood had purchased Samson from his father (Wood Sr.) along with his mother Mary and 5 siblings: Nelly, Albert, Henry, Emily, and Joe. Neely claimed he had purchased Sam. The court first awarded Wood damages of $800. |

Smith appealed the ruling to the SC, claiming he was only defending himself against Murray's attack on him, and that he was addressing the court when Murray began attacking him with law books and a chain. Smith lost his appeal to the SC. |
