Hopkins was accused of breaking into a store house belonging to A. L. Comer. He was accused of stealing from the store house and carrying away goods he took from inside. These goods included shovels, fabric, coats, and boots. Hopkins was identified as a black man by witnesses. Major evidence included mud found in Hopkin's shoe tread that matched footprints found near the crime scene. |

Mr. Martin, an African-American man, was convicted in 1874 for stealing two sides of bacon valued at $3 from Nancy Biles. The second count was for stealing an additional two sides. The third count was for stealing eight sides of bacon and four shoulders valued at $15. Martin said he was unable to get a fair trial in Warren county. The bacon was described as having been gnawed by cats then hung up using dried grass. |
