Defendant indicted and found guilty of "violating the age of consent" upon Lena Grant, 13 years old. Prior to the incident Barrett, an ex-soldier & tramp printer, had been examined at 2 hospitals & diagnosed with dementia praecox. His condition was not considered serious enough to warrant confinement. The Grants rented from Barrett, who boarded with them. Under the terms of their agreement the Grants were to keep the defendant's room clean, a task which usually fell to their daughter, Lena.
