Edward Smith died, leaving wife Catharine, to whom he left his plantation & negro woman Agnes (& daughter Nelly & issue) for Catharine's life, then to Edward's youngest daughter Nancy. Other issue of Agnes: Abigail, Alfred, James, Isaac. Nancy married Vaught Heaton; they had 5 children: Esther, John, Edmund, Mary, & Catharine (who married Allen Goodwin). When Vaught died, Nancy married James B. Morely, who then died. Dispute arose over ownership of negroes. Add. Def.: Nancy Morely, Steve McQueen. |

Reason & Zachariah B. are brothers contesting ownership of a tract of land, the circumstances of the Civil War complicated things. Z. was involved in 1864 capture of Young Harris, who was charged as Federal spy. Z. had to flee the county & turned the land over to R. R. was named in a damage suit by a Union soldier, Cox. Cox beat & threatened him and R. fled, leaving the land for Z. to care for. Upon their return, the brothers attempted to settle the land dispute. 267 pages in ET1936 |

Joseph G. Smith of Granville Co., MS sued for ownership of slaves, Hannah & Harriett, conveyed by deed of gift to himself & his deceased wife, Rachel, by his father-in-law John Clark. Clark dec. Washington Co. 7 Oct. 1825. Deed reg. in York Dist., SC. Stuart doubts validity of Smith's claim. Clark sold Harriett to Henry Ernest of Greene Co. on 13 Aug. 1824, & Hannah to Joan WAdd.e in Oct. 1824. Clark's heirs & the children of Harriett & Hannah named in transcript. |
