Defendant indicted and found guilty of "violating the age of consent" upon Lena Grant, 13 years old. Prior to the incident Barrett, an ex-soldier & tramp printer, had been examined at 2 hospitals & diagnosed with dementia praecox. His condition was not considered serious enough to warrant confinement. The Grants rented from Barrett, who boarded with them. Under the terms of their agreement the Grants were to keep the defendant's room clean, a task which usually fell to their daughter, Lena. |

Deputy Scott Vines arrested Smith after Smith tossed away a box--while Vines was running after him. The deputy later examined the box, smelled liquor, and arrested Smith. Some members of the jury sampled the evidence. The trial took place while Prohibition was still in effect. |

Plaintiff Phillips sued the Mayor and Alderman of Johnson City for enacting and enforcing an amendment to the local liquor ordinances that required places that sell liquor and malt beverage to close between 6:30 and 8 pm depending on the month. Phillips claimed this was a violation of his rights as a licensed liquor purveyor and overstepped the authority of the municipality. Phillips also opposed the raise in the fine for a violation, which included $25 to the person who informed the police. |
