McClain is the widow of John McClain and has two minor children. She accuses the city fathers of permitting a cannon to be placed and fired within the city limits. The cannon subsequently exploded, driving a large piece of metal through the wall of a grocery store, killing her husband who was standing in the store. She sued for $8,000 damages.
