Bird bought 585 acres from Carnes. Dispute arose over boundary lines on the land. Then Carnes sued Bird on the purchase money note. Elizabeth Jones, formerly Crawford died. This suit began in 1857, & at the time S. C. Norwood, clerk, had money from the Jones estate for her heirs, that he instead lent to people. When the borrowers failed to repay the sum, the sheriff levied a tract of land belonging to them, then sold it. Suit seeks to recover their inheritance, settling a long chain of debt & borrowing. |

The other heirs sued to make the stop timbering & to approach their land ownership as a group in agreement. |

The assets of Aaron Swafford, dec. are insufficient to pay debts and liabilities of the estate. He was also indebted to various other firms and individuals. Rankin and Alfred Swafford charge that defendants have no right to three slaves (Rachael, Lizzie, and Andrew), and that they be sold with the proceeds going toward the payment of debts. They also wanted any remaining assets after debt was paid to be distributed among the creditors. There are many defendants in this case. |
