Complainants initially filed separate bills, but their cases were united. All accused McKnight of trespassing and establishing property fences on land that is not actually his property. View Entry 1888 Indiana J. Wilkins v. W. M. Butler & Wash Edwards Cheatham Land and Title Dispute

Indiana J. Wilkins had been left land in a will and Hiram V. Hooper was the trustee for the land. The county sold the land to W. M. Butler claiming the taxes were unpaid for the year of 1883. Wilkins had receipts for tax payment for the years 1883-1886. It was also claimed in the case that the county did not follow protocol when selling the land as they didn't advertise it or sell it off in parcels.

Add'l defs: Samuel Douglass, Mrs. Ida, Felicia A., Ann, Mary, Nancy, Thomas, Irving, & Tennessee Stack, Eli Harris. Stack & his brother G. W. bought land together in Chatham County for $1000, one third of which was paid with cash. However,the remainder of the debt was never paid. The boundaries of the land were later disputed.

This suit was brought by the plaintiff to eject the defendant from a tract of 365 acres of land described as "the finest and best timber resources of Cheatham County." The property in question was originally granted to John Davis in 1838. Additional defendants: E. V. King and H. R. Gibbs. Casefile includes 4 property maps. Defendants purchased goods from the complainants for which they executed six promissory notes. They failed to pay, moved and became insolvent. Thereupon, the complained filed this suit to seize defendants' land. Defendants' deny there is land to seize.

View Entry 1896 Sycamore Manufacturing Co. v. M. Tomlin et al. Cheatham Breach of Official Duty

Plaintiff, Sycamore Manufacturing Co., named the largest taxpayer in Cheatham County, filed suit on their behalf and that of the County school children against defendants M. Tomlin, trustee of Cheatham County from 1882-1888, and his bondsman of sureties (too many to list) to recover revenues collected by him in his official capacity. The plaintiff claimed that the defendant absconded shortly after his election to his fourth term as trustee and defaulted on more than $6000.

Hale, A. H. Williams, A. Z. Carney, and W. C. Read. Tomlin was elected Trustee of Cheatham County in 1882. Def. (with the exception of W. C Reid and A. Z. Carney) were his sureties. Additional defendants: wife Mary Fulghum, W.J. Sullivan, administrator of William Greer, dec. Plaintiffs had been granted a judgment from defendant for $1200.00. At the time, defendant owned a valuable tract of land worth $6000 on the Harpeth River. Defendant conveyed said land to to Wm. Greer, dec., for $1500, relinquishing homestead & dower rights but still maintained possession. Complainants claim fraud, due to the unusual sale and inadequate purchase price.
