Indiana J. Wilkins had been left land in a will and Hiram V. Hooper was the trustee for the land. The county sold the land to W. M. Butler claiming the taxes were unpaid for the year of 1883. Wilkins had receipts for tax payment for the years 1883-1886. It was also claimed in the case that the county did not follow protocol when selling the land as they didn't advertise it or sell it off in parcels. |

Plaintiff, Sycamore Manufacturing Co., named the largest taxpayer in Cheatham County, filed suit on their behalf and that of the County school children against defendants M. Tomlin, trustee of Cheatham County from 1882-1888, and his bondsman of sureties (too many to list) to recover revenues collected by him in his official capacity. The plaintiff claimed that the defendant absconded shortly after his election to his fourth term as trustee and defaulted on more than $6000. |
