Thomas Province died intestate "some years ago," so his land title passed to his surviving children: Sarah Sutton, Hannah Wireman, and William Province. Also surviving were his grandchildren from the late John Province (son) and Polly Gibson (daughter). Plaintiffs complained that certain persons were unlawfully setting up a claim to the land: Pursifull and wife Mary; Marshal Catterell [Cotterell?] and wife Eliza; G. G. Elijah Jones and T. D. Knight jointly held two registered land grants in east Tennessee. The whereabouts of all the heirs are unknown and dividing the land would be difficult. The plaintiff asked the court to grant them the right to sell the property for partition and split the proceeds among the heirs. |

Case file includes lengthy inventory of store stock. Excellent source of the types of items stocked in a late 19th century mercantile in Tennessee. Suit apparently sought to settle the debt between the two parties. |

Samuel M. and Joseph K. Love were executors of the estate of Samuel C. Brown. William S. Brown and Samuel C. Brown were brothers. Samuel C. entered into business with their other brother, James M. Brown. Samuel was a physician and asked William to run his part of the business. William ran Samuel's portion of the business for 10 years and was never paid for his service. |
