Swafford, escaped from the state prison, had been travelling around on horseback. Swafford fatally wounding Deputy Sherriff Clarence Turner, shooting him in four different places. Turner was investigating a disturbance when Swafford rode up on horse back demanding that Turner get out of his way. Turner told Swafford he was under arrest and Swafford shot him with a shotgun. The defense pled self defense. Turner's bravery was memorialized on a national monument in 2007. |
