Add def: N. A. Kemper. Pla. was convicted by the Caldwell (judge in the case) of several misdemeanors and ordered to pay fines and costs. Pla. was unable to make payment and sentenced to the county workhouse. T. A. Sykes, Wm. Perkins, and J. P. Rhines then delivered several notes to satisfy plaintiff’s costs and obtain his release. Def. later brought suit against said notes and received judgement. Pla. complained that he was then unlawfully re-arrested and placed in a workhouse to work off the debt. |

Plaintiffs were awarded a judgment against the McNelly for repayment of $676.90 in Dekalb County in 1879. McNelly never paid the judgment. The plaintiffs claimed that in 1888, MCNelly promised to pay the amount when he was able, thereby validating the plaintiffs new claim to the debt many years later. |

The plaintiff had a toll gate that intersected the Louisville Branch Road and charged for those taking the turnpike into the city. Mr. Lindsley owned land adjacent to the toll and opened an avenue that allowed access without paying. The plaintiff won a judgment against Lindsley that ordered him to close the road but a mob tore down the toll in response. The plaintiff sued the County to enforce the injunction they issued, claiming that if they built a new gate it would be destroyed again. |
