Shelley convicted of "unlawfully and feloniously" having carnal knowledge of his niece, Mary A. Conner, and was sentenced to 5 years. Mary was the daughter of Shelley's half-sister, Nancy. This is the point on which the controversy arose: was incest committed because Mary and John were only half siblings, not whole ones? Court upheld the decision. |
