Gus Thomas and his wife drove in an ox wagon to a ball in Red Sulphur Springs. Sometime into the party, Thomas got into a fight with one Milligan, also called Murphy. Thomas & others pursued Murphy, who was found dead the next day across the state line in Miss. A gunshot had hit him in the face, tearing off his mouth & nose. A case attached to this one involves the murder of Alvin L. Martin, alias A. L. Martin. Thomas was also convicted of killing Martin. |

Victim: Orvil Wilkins. Lillian Gardner, ex wife of defendant. They married October 4, 1921 in Hardin County. They had one child, Orvil Wilkins, deceased who died at the home of Gardner's stepfather, Bab Spencer. Gardner claimed that Wilkins often abused the baby who was only a few months old. |

Dixon was the Hardin County Sherriff. Gatlin was under contract with US government to transport mail from Cornith MS to Savanah TN. Gatlin also carried passengers in a Reo bus. Hardin County issued a distress warrant stating that Gatlin had not taken out a proper license to carry passengers. Gatlin claimed that carrying passengers into Shiloh National Military Park was under the jurisdiction of the US government therefore he was not required to have a license through Hardin County. |

"Henry Blount, a deputy sheriff of Hardin County, with one Arthur Kelly, about 9:30 at night in the early days of November, 1924, was out south of Savannah, about the old Burnt Stand, watching to see if he could catch some parties who were reported to be in the whiskey business." They heard some people "cursing" and went to investigate. One person took off on a horse but they were able to grab the bridle reins of Foust's horse. They found "fruit jars containing liquor" in sacks tied to Foust's saddle. |

Ed Cromwell, deputy sheriff of Hardin County, Sheriff Williams, Deputy Sheriff W. C. Berlin, Wayne Hall, and John Pipes were out south of Savannah searching for an illegal still. "When they got there a run had already been made and the still moved away." They heard shots and followed the sound to the public road. The defendant ran, they gave chase, and Foust fell on the ground. Cromwell grabbed Foust by the collar and picked up a "half gallon jug that contained white corn whiskey." |
