Samuel Cowas was a man of color and Mary Cowas was a white woman. They were not married by law. Kilter was looking to to pay off the balance for the land and was also seeking the court to state that Mary Cowan could not in the future seek money for the homestead or claim ownership. |

When the plaintiffs attempted to sell a part of said property, a second title search found that Goddard did not have full title to the property. Hayes [alt. spelled Haines] bought a tract of land belonging to Griffin at a sheriff's sale for $150. Hayes agreed to become co-surety with Griffin for fines and costs against his son William Griffin in exchange for Griffin releasing his equity of redemption upon said tract of land. Griffin refused to honor agreement and sought to sell land to other parties. Hayes issued an attachment and injunction suit to restrain Griffin from selling land and have Griffin deed/release his rights of redemption. |

In Nov of 1864, Wilhite was arrested by US soldiers & taken to Knoxville, at which time Hickey was put in possession of Wilhite's land under lease agreement she had with William G. Brownlow, Special Agent of US Treasury Dept, appointed to take charge of & lease captured & abandoned property. Previous owner of the land (H.W. Swan) said to be a rebel. Land in dispute: 30 acres on Sevierville Road, 4-1/2 miles from Knoxville. Jury ruled for Wilhite. |

Brownlows recovered judgment against Ressler for $430 & for possession of premises at No. 310 Wall Avenue in Knoxville, where proprietorship shoe repair business was located (known as Wall Avenue Shoe Shop). Shop at 1 point operated by Louis Friedman, brother-in-law of Fred Millen, who leased the premises from the Brownlows. Friedman had become indebted to Ressler, who allowed Millen's son Louis to operate the shoe repair shop until debt pd. Dispute over ownership of the shop. |

Rawlings sued Maples for $134. In 1898 Maples bought a house making it his homestead. He then mortgaged it to Charles O. Ward, from who the house was purchased, although the deed named Cunningham. Maples was to pay Ward a total of $950, putting $200 down in cash. However, the judgment lien against Maples took precedence before his homestead, threatening him and his family with homelessness. |
