According to witnesses, the defendant was in a heated exchange with a person named Brock who was a tenant on the defendants property. The defendant believed he was owed rent from Brock and had an attachment placed in the hands of Forrest Patrick who was deputized as a special officer. Patrick brought Brock to the home of Edmonson where the exchange occurred. |

The murder occurred in Payne's store known as the Narrow Gage Bakery located on the west side of the public square in Fayetteville, Tennessee. Alexander testifies that Payne first attacked him with weights, forcing him to react in self-defense. |

Also charged with larceny from the person. Found guilty by the jury of the first charge, robbery of a coat, a pair of shoes, four yards of calico, and $1.40. The judge sentenced Hugh Horner to 10 years in prison. Horner was white. The prosecution's only witness, Lewis McCollum was a Negro. Horner claimed there was no forcible taking necessary to support the finding of guilt on the robbery charge. |
