Both Addison Denton and a woman referred to as Rachel, mother of the plaintiff, were slaves at the time of their marriage. Rachel was owned by Jerry Crafton or Widow Hill and previously married to several men including; William Voorhies, Geo. McKissack, and Alex Brown, all slaves. The marriage between Rachel and Denton was performed by Peter Nelson. Denton later married Sylvester Hayes. |
