View Entry 1855 Joseph D. Smith v. Ezekiel Ward Jr. Meigs Debt

Smith sued Ward for $35 debt due by note; Ward claimed setoff for $50 claim of Samuel H. Howell against Smith (for a watch Howell allegedly sold Smith--who says he never bought a watch from Howell "since the world was made"). Court allowed setoff, leaving $15 balance owed to Ward.

View Entry 1855 Matthew Buchanan v. Matthew A. White Meigs Fraudulent Conveyance

White sold to Buchanan for $100 a bay horse beast commonly called a gelding, claiming then that the horse was sound & healthy & a good work horse, which Buchanan says was not true, as the horse was diseased with (among other things) a disorder called fits Others involved: Joseph D. Smith (man to whom Buchanan sold horse & who brought it back to Buchanan saying it had fits). Witnesses: Wm Stewart, Henry Lankford, Richard Stewart, Robert E. Cate, Francis A. Taff, John C. Gant, B.F. White (def's brother)

View Entry 1855 R. T. Bridges & wife Caroline Bridges v. Absalom Guinn Meigs Land and Title Dispute

Bridges owned 80 acres of land in Hiwassee District & claimed Guinn ejected them from it. As the court put it, Bridges had a "younger grant [to the land] founded upon the elder entry" & Guinn had the reverse, "the elder grant but the younger entry." The Bridges' claim was through Caroline's dad Dennis C. Murphy. Guinn's claim was through a man named Reynolds said to be the first settler of the land, & Guinn was in possession of the land when Murphy died.

"on the 6th day of December 1854 in the county aforesaid did unlawfully make an assault upon Michael Fooshee by drawing an axe on him and swearing he would kill him."
