Petition for Year's Support. Sophia, widow of Samuel, dissented to his will & requested her year's support be determined & set aside. Samuel left large estate (perhaps $100 thousand), including land, negroes, stock, etc. Commission appointed to determine year's support, set at $4-5,000, which court approved & Clark appealed. At that time, Sophia (then quite old) indicated her family consisted of 75 negroes of various ages, health, & size, as well as an overseer; only Sophia & overseer were white. |
