Laura Betty was married to W. F. M. Betty, but they divorced. Although he was violent with her, Laura remarried her ex-husband. He was made to sign a pre-nuptial agreement that he could not dispose of her property without expressed permission. He became abusive once more, asking her to leave during their first week of reconciliation. He took control of her estate, leaving Laura nothing. She sued to recover control of her assets and investments.
