View Entry 1880 Avery Bradley v. State Sevier Murder

Plaintiff was accused of shooting and killing D. C. Maples near Maples' home in Sevier County, TN. Bradley was observed leaving the area with a gun and several witnesses testified to finding his tracks near the scene of the murder. Bradley was described as “quarrelsome,” and had history of disagreements with Maples.

View Entry 1931 Buford Cole v. State Sevier Assault, Felonious

Pla. in error is accused of stabbing Charlie Dodgin with a pocket knife with intent to kill. Pla. in error, his wife, Otha Reagan, and Dodgin spent the night at Skiyuki Inn, which is described as a restaurant and soft drink stand. During the night, all of the parties consumed whiskey. After Pla. in error fell asleep, Dodgin and Pla.'s wife got into an argument and struck each other. Upon learning this, the Pla. in error went to Dodgin and stabbed him.

Cause of Action: Miscegenation. Hodson also spelled Hodgson and Hodsden. Plaintiff, an African American, is accused of living with Nancy Marris, alias Nancy Lewis, a white woman. The couple is accused of living together as man and wife.

Fred Bales was on a small motor boat on the river when he came across L. A. Hodge and family. Bales held up fruit jar of clear liquid and shook it. He then asked Hodge if Mrs. Hodge was his wife or were they just living together. Bales also circled the Hodge's craft several times. The actual charge as stated was Public Drunkenness.

View Entry 1936 J. O. Edington v. State Sevier Assault, Felonious

Three cases decided against Edington for carrying a blackjack, carrying a pistol, and felonious assault upon F. L. Hicks, the prosecutor! Large number of witnesses giving testimony. Exhibits include wallpaper samples (Edington was a paper hanger) entered during W. A. Coughorn testimony, Hicks's arrest warrant for [Joseph Otis Edington], and wallpaper receipts. Testimony includes that of character witnesses for Edington. Indexed.

View Entry 1935 James Derrick v. State Sevier Murder

James Derrick was charged with the murder of Rhoden Denton. He was charged with using rocks and clubs on Rhoden Denton which left him with many mortal wounds that resulted in his death. This case was marked 1935 but it is stated that the murder and original charge took place in 1903 so the case files included may be part of an appeal that took place in 1935.

Victims: Laura & William Whaley. The victims were one of the last people to be killed during the mid 1890's, where a vigilante group known as the White Caps took the law into their own hands in order to rid Sevier county of vice. As a result of the widespread outrage of the Whaley's deaths the Tennessee Legislature banned extra legal conspiracies and vigilante groups.

View Entry 1865 Peyton McCrosky v. State Sevier Assault, Felonious

This is an appeal. Peyton, a free black man, was accused of assault upon Leannah Reed, who was white, shooting and wounding her hand & arm on 22 March, 1865. Circuit court found Peyton guilty and sentenced 5 yrs. hard at the TN State Penitentiary. All of this came out of a scuffle between Peyton and Leannah's son Harrison Reed over a bottle of Whiskey. When Peyton wouldn't give it up to Harrison, he called for his mother to bring his pistol. The firearm discharged when Peyton grabbed for it.

View Entry 1928 Sol Williams & John Parton v. State Sevier Murder

In 1924 John Parton shot & killed Joe Rector. Parton & Williams were drunk, walking down the road, past the Rector home, on their way to visit a prostitute, Ida Bohanan. During testimony Parton tried to frame Williams, blaming him for the shooting, though Williams remained on the road during the incident. File includes a request for pardon, letters in support of Williams, petitions, all advocating for clemency. Exhibits: 3 photographs. Excellent description of area's social culture.

The 1845 statewide election decided gubernatorial and congressional offices. Aaron V. Brown was elected governor that year.
