Pla. in error, his wife, Otha Reagan, and Dodgin spent the night at Skiyuki Inn, which is described as a restaurant and soft drink stand. During the night, all of the parties consumed whiskey. After Pla. in error fell asleep, Dodgin and Pla.'s wife got into an argument and struck each other. Upon learning this, the Pla. in error went to Dodgin and stabbed him. |

The victims were one of the last people to be killed during the mid 1890's, where a vigilante group known as the White Caps took the law into their own hands in order to rid Sevier county of vice. As a result of the widespread outrage of the Whaley's deaths the Tennessee Legislature banned extra legal conspiracies and vigilante groups. |

This is an appeal. Peyton, a free black man, was accused of assault upon Leannah Reed, who was white, shooting and wounding her hand & arm on 22 March, 1865. Circuit court found Peyton guilty and sentenced 5 yrs. hard at the TN State Penitentiary. All of this came out of a scuffle between Peyton and Leannah's son Harrison Reed over a bottle of Whiskey. When Peyton wouldn't give it up to Harrison, he called for his mother to bring his pistol. The firearm discharged when Peyton grabbed for it. |

During testimony Parton tried to frame Williams, blaming him for the shooting, though Williams remained on the road during the incident. File includes a request for pardon, letters in support of Williams, petitions, all advocating for clemency. Exhibits: 3 photographs. Excellent description of area's social culture. |
