Jones is the widow of William E. Jones. Her, along with her children and grandchildren are bring a suit against Townsend over a tract of land that belonged to William Jones. The defendant, Townsend, allegedly set up a claim to the land. Timber was being cut off the land and the plaintiffs were not happy about it. The tract was about 1150 acres. Both Sherry and his co-defendant, Dennis Saxton, were from Shelby County. John McKinley died leaving two lots of land in Memphis. The plaintiffs include Andrew McKinley of New York, Luther T. Thurston of Kentucky, Mary Churchill of Louisville and her daughter Mary Moss Churchill, Julia January and her husband Derick A. January of St. Louis, and Robert M. Patton of Alabama. Plaintiffs allege that the lots were never sold to the defendants and that they obtained possession of them illegally. |

Michael Eagan died in 1862 leaving a considerable estate behind. The plaintiffs allege that when Melson was appointed administrator of the Eagan's estate he collected his rents, debts due to him and other assets to a large amount wasted and misappropriated the same. Cheek and his business partner Jesse W. Page sue for the use of Robert C. Brinkley. They bought June 1866 a $5000 insurance policy by the Columbia Fire Ins. Co. of New York for which they paid $200 on machinery fixed and movable in the 3 story cotton mill in Memphis near the Wolf River and Court Square. In November 1866 a fire damaged or destroyed enough of the property to make the Columbia Fire Ins. Co. liable. The plaintiffs sue to force payment. |

Parrott set it up where Bruce was the 'aren't to hire out his slaves, take care of them with clothes, medical attention, etc. The slaves were being rented out in Grenada, Mississippi and they were being paid for in Confederate money, due to Confederate occupation in 1862. Initially, Houghton sued Bruce, after the Civil War, for money allegedly paid him for the slaves of Parrott he rented out. Subsequently, Bruce filed a countersuit. |

Mathes is a tax collector. When the plaintiffs started their business, they agreed to pay a tax based on the largest amount of stock over the past year. They ended up paying $782--equaling about .60 cents for every $100 worth of stock. However, Mathes said they also had to pay a license tax equal to the same amount. Plaintiffs say the extra tax is illegal. |

John C. Berry of Arkansas bought a quantity of corn from the firm Palluli & Reese. With them present he paid a portion of the purchase money to Captain Lee of the steamer Cheek and a portion to each partner. Reese soon obtained a warrant against him but he was unable to comply because word of the warrant reached him as his steam boat was about to set sail and he had prior business obligations that would have been badly hurt if he had not left. He alleges he paid all the debt. |
