Annie Thomas filed this case as next friend of Estella, Alexander, and Steven Thomas against Nealis and A. J. Harris, back tax collector of Shelby County. Additional Defendant: W. S. Garrett. Plaintiff sued by husband & next friend, J. B. Parrent. In 1894 plaintiff made bill of sale to Bailey for hardware store that was part of her separate estate, using store as security for $2906.65 owed to Bailey. When debt not paid in specified time Bailey took possession of store & its goods & denied them access. Plaintiff maintains this is unlawful as store part of her separate estate. Cover is missing. Co-plaintiff: John McKinney. Co-defendant: Yazoo & Mississippi Valley Railroad. Plaintiff was hired as a washerwoman for the railroad companies, who, she says, discharged her without cause. She is sued for $5000 damages.

View Entry 1899 R. J. Allen v. H. T. Bruce & Co. Shelby Contract Dispute and Damages

Allen arrived in Memphis w/a car load of ponies & 2 mules during the 1898 yellow fever epidemic. He requested the stock be sent to Bruce, who ran a stable. The city was under strict quarantine, and no one was allowed in the city. Bruce told him the health officers were after him & advised him to leave the city. It was charged that Bruce hurriedly induced Allen to trade stock for land in Missouri. A deed was made, but Allen later discovered the land belonged to someone else.
