Allen arrived in Memphis w/a car load of ponies & 2 mules during the 1898 yellow fever epidemic. He requested the stock be sent to Bruce, who ran a stable. The city was under strict quarantine, and no one was allowed in the city. Bruce told him the health officers were after him & advised him to leave the city. It was charged that Bruce hurriedly induced Allen to trade stock for land in Missouri. A deed was made, but Allen later discovered the land belonged to someone else. |
