Elias Imman, a colored man and former slave who bought his freedom as well as the freedom of his wife and their children listed above. Then, in 1842, Elias was called into court to answer Henry Smith on charge of debt, which Elias thought Smith had dismissed, only to find out later Smith had obtained judgment against him for $46. Henry Scruggs and Smith without notice and in the dark seized Elias' children as execution of judgment. Plaintiff suing for decree declaring his children free. |
