View Entry 1856 James S. Boyd v. Anthony L. Maxwell, Jr. et al Knox Contract Dispute and Damages

Add. defendant: C. Porvell. Plaintiff entered into a contract to furnish for the defendants working under the firm name of Maxwell Briggs & Company a large amount of lumber for a rail road bridge. sued for the recovery of $4,000 in goods and labor for which the plaintiff was never paid by the defendant's company.

View Entry 1856 John Alison v. James M. Davis et al. Washington Land and Title Dispute

Additional defendants: Thomas J. Powell and Albert J. Tipton. Powell had recovered judgment against Alison for $27.66. Execution was returned due to Alison not having personal property to satisfy judgment. Alison demands that title to tract of land be divested from Tipton and Davis and vested in himself as well as an account taken of rents and profits due to Alison.

View Entry 1856 John McMahan v. Jackson Grubb & R. J. Engledon McMinn Contract for Labor and Materials

Grubb & Engledon were partners in tailoring business and McMahan a farmer. Both parties had an arrangement in which McMahan furnished Grubb & Engledon with produce in exchange for their tailoring clothes for him. It was also agreed that both Grubb's & Engledon's accounts were blended. Plaintiff unaware of change in relationship between def'ts who later dispute in three other cases about account balances (what they did or did not receive).

View Entry 1856 Lyman Dennison v. George Cox, Solomon Graves & Neal McCoy Polk Land and Title Dispute

In 1841, Graves entered 40 acres in Ocoee District, southwest corner of southwest quarter of sec. 10, 4th fractional township, south range, five east of basis line. But certificate of entry mistakenly omitted "fractional" & "south". Entry 4120, Grant 4085 Graves sold the land to McCoy who sold to John M. Dow who sold to Dennison in 1853. Cox then caused entry to be made for the land in 1854. Entry 9058, Grant 7477. Hence this suit.

Incomplete file: land originally possessed by Nathan's dad Enoch, who Nathan took care of for 12 yrs until Enoch died. Enoch entered land, transferred it to Nathan, who entered adjoining land & got state grant No. 299.62 for all 98-1/2 acres (entry 1183). Dispute with bro-in-law Ezekiel Chenoweth [Chinauth] (m. Nathan's sister Sarah). Other sibs: Lydia, Nancy, Barbary & Margaret Jobe; Mary (m. John White). Land on waters of Sinking Creek.

View Entry 1856 Polly Lowry by next friend William Lowry Jr. v. William Lowry Sr. et al. McMinn Land and Title Dispute

Additional defendants: Barclay McGhee, Margaret H. Niles and husband J.W.J. Niles & Charles M. McGhee. Very complex dispute over land once belonging to Polly Lowry's father, Barclay McGhee, dec. Polly's brother, John McGhee had promised to purchase and settle for Polly's life and her children after her death a tract of land provided from Barclay McGhee's estate. Wm Lowry and John Lowry became insolvent. John died and title passed to his children (Add. deft's) who refuse to convey land to plaintiff.

Griffith), Timothy, Anna (m. Jefferson Rogers), & William (dec) who left children Jesse, James, Timothy, Ambrose, Martha, & Nancy (m. Lorenzo Little). Def Susan is also Goff heir. Ambrose left no widow. Possibly related case: Phebe Goff et al.v. Samuel Whittenburg et al, ET Box 1156 (also involves Cumberland Mountain land).

View Entry 1856 William Gammon v. James S. May et al Sullivan Land and Title Dispute

Additional defendants listed in file. The defendant is the administrator of the estate of David Sharer, Jr. In 1837, Peter Hickman executed a bill to Thomas Titsworth for $1,120 and the plaintiff was a surety to it. P. Hickman then left to Mississippi & passed away without paying the creditors. D. Sharer, Jr. was also a creditor to the bill and took both sureties portions of the bill out of the plaintiff's property, namely a tract of land.

Walter R. Evans, as trustee sold a tact of land situated in Powell's valley, under a deed of trust executed by James E. Bowman to satisfy certain debts and demands due and owing said Bowman to William Kincaid.
