Lynch was executor of George Squibbs estate. In his will, Squibb requested $500.00 be given to his then slave Burts once his wife died, & that she should be sent to Liberia or "some other suitable place." The widow Mary Squibb claimed Burts deserted in 1863, claiming her legal right to freedom. Burts claims she stayed until Squibb ordered her to leave. Burts was granted $500 but failed to collect it. Court reinstated this award, with her husband Henderson Burts as agent. |

Testimony notes "the Dunns" were whipped; unclear if that means… ...Plaintiff & his dad or Plaintiff & his son. Amos heard boasting "how the Lincolnite" howled. Both Def.. died during lawsuit & succession of admrs. appointed for each. Events occurred during 1st yr. of war, before the Conscript. |

Thomas Drew died in 1862 leaving a large estate consisting of a large tract of land and horses, mules, cattle, sheep, slaves and furniture. He claimed that he had full power to sell the slaves and the plaintiff bid on a slave and placed two notes notes for consideration for the purchase of the slave. The plaintiff claims that the sale was illegal and wishes to file an injunction against the defendant from collecting the notes. |

Hoyl [alt. spelling Hoyle] purchased house and lot in Cleveland, TN, which was sold by decree in suit of John G. Glass & wife Mary E. Glass v. John A. Campbell to enforce their vendors lien. Hoyl proposed to sell his bid contract for said lot to Hunt for a $75 note. But in next term of court, sale was set aside and sale was never confirmed. Hunt failed to get title and lot and Hoyl refused to pay back $75. Hunt asks that Jones' note for Hoyl's house and lot be used to get his money back. |

Nelson drew a $4,000 bill in favor of Porter endorsed by payer to A.G. Lillard & by Lillard to G.W. Alexander & by him to Ocoee Bank. Johnson purchased 3 slaves from Nelson and Porter (a 20 year old woman named Perlirze[?], her 3 year old child Laura, and 18 month Sambo). Defendants failed to register bill of sale. See related case Ocoee Bank v. William C. Nelson, et al.; slaves were levied as payment for debt (see ET 1201). Johnson wanted defendants to repay him purchase money for the slaves. |
