Nance, it was charged, was "seduced by the instigations of the Devil" to assault and beat to death the victim with rocks, sticks, bludgeons, clubs, knives, pistols and staffs. Nance, referred to as "son of Clement, late a laborer of this county," was sentenced to death. Others testified they heard Nance say he had killed that "damed [sic] Rascal" William McBee. Grand jury charged Keller, 4 other defs - Archibald Howland, Wm Dukes, Franklin Wyatt, John Keller -with assaulting Benjamin Wampler (nearly 70 yrs old), breaking into his house armed w/guns, stealing personal property. Wampler: Emerson Keller also there. Wampler was Union man; Def. were rebels. George Keller found guilty, sentenced to 5 yrs prison. Witness Mariah Keller (George's mom): George was 18 miles away boarding w/Wm Moore when crime committed. Court granted new trial; convicted again. |

The victim was shot after a fight broke out between her son, William Reed, and the defendant. William Reed believed the defendant was attempting to steal his whiskey. |

The defendant allegedly went against the peace and government of the state and attempted to cause an insurrection and rebellion to start an open war against the state government. The defendant gathered roughly one thousand people who were armed with guns and cannons and arranged in a war like manner to fight against the state government. |

Jury found Anderson guilty and sentence him to 5 years of hard labor in the pentitentiary. The defendant appealed. Anderson later did not show up in court and was fined $1000. |

Rankin charged with killing John A. Thornhill in June 1865, who died from gunshots to the head, neck, and chest. Rankin was a First Lieutenant in the U.S. Co. B, 9th TN Cavalry. Rankin had been tried in court martial where he had been acquitted. Rankin in this court again pleads not guilty and prays that he may be dismissed. New trial was granted. Jury sided with defendant, then Attorney General appealed. No final verdict. |

Fight on railroad near Morristown; some drunk, "coffee pot full of liquor" in crowd. Prior difficulties between parties. Holdman lived on Moore's plantation. Jury: voluntary manslaughter, 5 yrs in jail, but then granted Moore (not Holdman) new trial. Geographical references: Cooter's shop, McClanahans, Rhea town. |

Thornburg, Newton Lane) for shooting at Milton Hale & stealing $450 & other personal property from him. Group indicted appear to be military company. Hale's testimony recounts Civil War battle (Bulls Gap) that occurred on the day in question (Nov 11, 1864), 7 miles from his house. |

Alexander was a colored man charged with stealing corn from the East Tennessee and Virginia Rail Road Company. Alexander claimed he had already been charged, tried & acquitted of this crime. Attorney general argued re-trial was proper because the first indictment improperly claimed that the victim was East Tennessee and Virginia Rail Road, while the second indictment got the name right: it was East Tennessee and Virginia Rail Road COMPANY. Court agreed with atty gen & jury convicted him. SC reversed it. |
