Grand jury indicted the Paynes for assaulting William J. H. Griffin, alleging they did "beat, wound, and ill-treat" Griffith. Jury found them guilty. Griffin testified that 3-4 weeks earlier, Constable M.A. Walker came to his fields w/Mr. Wilson; they had replevy warrant for 1 of Griffin's cows, said warrant sued out by Wiley Payne, who was waiting w/Barbara outside the field 250 yards away. Griffith & Wiley had heated conversation & altercation resulted, which included Barbara (she used club). |

Michal Shipwash charged with assault & battery against Thomas Childress. Shipwash, William Davis and James R. Davis as sureties were indebted to state for $250 each to be void on condition that defendant should appear in court. Because Shipwash did not appear in court to answer charge, they have to pay the $250 each. Defendants demur and the Attorney General sustains it. Each defendant was tried separately. |

Warwick started neighborhood school by subscription, Warwick to be paid varying rates to teach different subjects: spelling, reading, writing, arithmetic, English grammar, geography, natural philosophy. Schoolhouse built on Jonathan Bishop's land. Warwick taught 4 weeks, then locked out of schoolhouse, giving rise to dispute. Within testimony some questioned Warwick's teaching competency, but also his loyalty to the CSA. School directors: Bishop, Roberts, Adam Hodges. |
