Camp Porter, an African American carpenter, was prosecuted for attempted petty larceny after breaking into the home of John Kent & attempt to rape Kent's wife, Elizabeth Ann Kent. Both Porter & Kent worked for Judge Temple, Porter even lived on his property. Porter would visit the Kent family to visit, while "picking his banjo." Rape charge dropped due to lack of evidence. This case was consolidated with Nancy Dalzell, John Shanks, admr., Margaret Kayter, J. A . McKinney, admr., C. C. Miller, Wiley Miller, Wesley Phipps, all v. George Powell. Stated in Decree on page 319. In May 1868, Alexander purchased land supposedly previously belonging to Powell. Deed said that any debts called on Powell in the next two years could be paid by possession of the land purchased by Alexander. Case seeks to settle debts and disputes on land ownership.

Webb were partners under the firm name N.A. Hardee & Company, through which purchased vast amounts of land. Hardee has possession of the papers as surviving partner, but as legal representative of Webb's estate, the plaintiff holds partial rights to the properties and should be able to organize it for J. Webb's descendants as he sees fit.

The defendant unlawfully and forcibly entered the property of the plaintiff and detained the same from him without any reasonable or lawful ground.

Add. defendants: F. Madison Gass, G. W. Jones, William Miller, & Thomas Vance. In 1864, the defendant unlawfully seized and rode away on one large gray horse (Italian) that was the rightful property of the plaintiff. They then sold the horse, valued at $700, and converted and disposed of the same to their own use. Suing for damages in the sum of $1,000.

Dispute also involves debt.

Additional plaintiffs: J. C. Flanders and W. H. Lillard. The particulars of the case are not clear. It seems that Mabry was living on Bell’s land. Bell wanted to sell the land and Mabry would not vacate. Bell sought damages of $1,000

Scarborough sued Lyle for fraudulently selling him a mare that was not his to sell. Jury ruled in Scarborough's favor & judgment satisfied through sale of 80 acres of Lyle's land. Witnesses included J. D. Scarborough (pla.'s dad). Others involved in dispute re title to mare (surnames): Christian, Everett, Nicholson.

Additional Defendant: John Roberts. Case also involves the contested ownership of "negroes."

Additional Cause of Action: Ejectment. Estate of Thomas Yates.

McDaniel sued railroad company for damages for killing and/or injuring a 3 cattle. Court ruled in plaintiff's favor for $75 damages.

Additional defendants: Brumley, admr. of James Greer, R. F. Friar, Louisa G. Harmis and Emiling Covington.

Additional defendant: Elizabeth Jones. Case involves the estate of Elizabeth Jones West.

Henry Crippen indicted & found guilty of assault & battery; fined $5. Trials of co-defendants J. L. Crippen & Daniel Crippen severed. Jury found them & third co-def. O. A. [E. A.] O'Dell guilty & sentenced them each w/$10 fine, later reduced to 50 cents.

Plaintiff is the administrator of the estate of M. D. Quinn (dec.). John Shields also listed as a defendant in the summons. Plea of trespass to the plaintiff's damage of $50,000 for when the defendants, listed as Rebels and traitors to the state, unlaw- fully and with force of arms entered the home of the deceased, then alive, and assaulted him. They forced him to leave his property and kept him for a full month.

The parties are joint owners of a tract of land. In 1859, a case was made against John C. Rutledge to lay off the downer for the defendant in the said land and valued the plaintiffs' interest in the land twice or three times the value of the land. The plaintiffs filed the bill to fully obtain their rights to the portions of the land allotted to them in the original agreement.

Court ordered the sale of Cox's land, Cox attempted multiple times to block the sale of his land. Cox claims the court did not make the legally required amount of public announcements for the sale.

Defendant is the administrator of the estate of Elmus Smith (dec.). Add. defendants: A.P. Ramsey, A.P. Mitchell, L. Walker, Sarah E. Smith, & Elmus Smith. The plaintiff became the purchaser of a tract of land of the estate of Ruben Smith (dec.) from a public sale by the defendant for $537. After the defendant collected the purchase money, the defendant learned he had no jurisdiction to sell the land and so all the proceedings were void as no title was transferred to the plaintiff.
