In 1865 Mary Williams then Mary Norton went to live with Charles H. Ledsinger. He had previously been indebted to her father, John by then deceased. He seems to have paid that debt and then borrowed at least $50 from her. He later died and she with her husband sued his estate. |

In 1867 Helton was appointed Clerk of Chancery Court of Wayne County. During his tenure he executed several bonds for $10,000 each with defendants M. J. Sims, Joseph G. Berry, and E. V. Tunnard, R. P. Cypert, C. M. Thompson, W. R. Porter & C. C. Stribling as securities. However, he failed to turn over all of the money he collected. He and his securities were sued to recover the money owed to the County. |

Cheatham tried to get the remainder of the estate as they were issued a smaller and unfair bequest. Suit seeks to lawfully clarify bequests to settle dispute. |

B. F. Stoltz, as administrator of Henry Stoltz, entered a mortgage with the defendants on 61 acres of land as part of a mortgage, exempting his homestead from the agreement. The defendants alleged that the mortgage was unpaid. They placed a lien on the property, then filed suit to foreclose. Stoltz did not attend the procedure, and his land and homestead were foreclosed upon and sold. Stoltz sued to invalidate the sale and get his homestead back. |

The case first started with McCarty sued the City of Memphis. The city dug a hole by a sidewalk and failed to put up a warning for pedestrians. McCarty fell in the hole and was injured severely, possibly, he argues, for life. He was awarded $1500 for his trouble. The city filed an appeal on the case. |

Lewis P. Totty and John B. Grey contested the will of Harrison Totty, dec., February 3, 1858. George W. Martin & Matilda Totty were the executors. He left the majority of his property to his widow, but requested the balance of his property be sold and proceeds divided up. He left Perritt $5, however she died on September 22, 1873 before the case could be heard. |

Thoms sued Miller for $2,000 on note, but Miller claimed debt was discharged in bankruptcy in 1870. Thoms claimed that if that was so, he received no notice of the bankruptcy proceeding & was not on the bankruptcy list of creditors. Court ruled in Thoms' favor. (Miller's bankruptcy case was decided under what appears to be the first federal bankruptcy law, passed in 1867.) |
