In 1865 Abbey was awarded a judgement against Paul for $950. The Sherriff found a lot Paul's land that he sold to pay the judgment the following September. Abbey was the highest bidder at the auction, & the debt was struck off. However, Paul never exe- cited a deed to Abbey. They also found that it had been previously levied and sold on a debt to John Goss. Abbey sued to recover the deed or the debt. |

In 1855 Armfield employed Ben Cagle, a millwright and mechanic to rehab the dilapidated resort at Beersheba Springs. Armfield confided in Cagle, giving him his will, notes & money to keep safe during the war. He also convinced Cagle to invest in a tannery at Beersheba. Armfield said he would split his money with Cagle, but Armfield made an amended will writing Cagle out of the bequest. Cagle was also left with a tannery in a deserted town, & no return from this investment. He sued for the original bequest |
