Thomas Cassels, one of the earliest black legislators (42nd General Assembly, 1881-1882), is the attorney for the defendant's appeal (see cover page). The full charge against Jones is larceny and receiving stolen goods, specifically two hams that were the property of J. N. Oliver. Jones is not identified as African American, but since Cassels is his attorney, he probably is. |
