This dispute concerns a leased mining property and a provision to pay to the lessor a percentage of the coal taken from the mine. Because other similar suits are referenced in the case, it is difficult to identify the names of parties. They seem to be John Fitzwater, E. F. Falconett, M. C. Dibrell, J. W. Sawyer, and L. S. Goodrich, H. C. Snodgrass, Joseph Mynes (Myrres?), and Benton McMillan.

The paperwork in this case was evidently lost before it arrived at the Supreme Court, so this is a duplicate copy of the transcript. The clerk explains that the original papers were lost "several years past," and provides very little useful information about the original case.

Bass accused by Knott of falsely and maliciously procuring an indictment against Knott, charging that Knott stole five heads of cattle from a couple named Jackson. Knott was subsequently arrested and sued. Case was dismissed under the pretenses that the original indictment was filed unlawfully. Knott now suing Bass for $10,000 in damages for false prosecution.

View Entry 1884 King Russey v. Marion Ray et al. Franklin Damages

The defendants are road commissioners. The others are Carrol Looney & F. B. Sloan. The story is that the plaintiff's blind horse caught its foot in a hole in the bridge and, while trying to extricate itself, fell from the bridge to its death. The commissioners are accused of failure to discharge their duty to keep the roads in safe condition and sued for the loss of the horse. Russey is identified in the transcript as "colored."

On 27 Jan. 1883, while traveling on the steamboat from New Orleans, LA to Memphis, Smith was attacked & beaten without cause by one of the ship's employees. Smith sued for $25,000 in damages. Full name of company Reuben R. Springer Transportation Co. of KY (possibly Covington, KY), President H. U. Hart. The Reuben R. Springer is a steamboat carrying passengers & freight.
