Gillespie also spelled Gillispie. Acting as an agent for Scribner and Sons of New York City, Gillespie sold a book titled "Stanley's Darkest Africa," throughout the town of Fayetteville. Plaintiff claims that he was originally told that he was not liable for State and County taxes, but upon delivery of the books, the plaintiff was informed that he owed a privilege tax. Plaintiff refused to pay and the books were seized. |

The plaintiff purchased the privilege of running a "ball and ring," pitching game within the enclosure of the Lincoln County Fairgrounds during a fair. Plaintiff states that after running the game for only a few minutes he was arrested and charged with running a gambling game. The plaintiff is seeking the return of the payment he made to the defendant. The plaintiff's game consisted of a plank with a hole in it that contains a "negro head," which players attempt to hit with balls. |

The defendant was accused of operating a tool booth and collecting tolls on the Fayetteville and Shelbyville Turnpike without a license. The defendant claims that the taking of tolls was not a privilege that requires a license. Casefile also includes a February 1892 grand jury report that lists multiple other people and businesses (too many to name) accused of committing offences in Lincoln County. Def. in error was the owner of a mercantile business selling dry goods, groceries, hardware, and produce, located in Charity, TN. The building which housed said business and the stock of goods inside were destroyed by fire on April 15, 1890. Def. claims said business was insured against fire by the pla. in error and complains that pla. has refused to honor the insurance contract. Def. is seeking payment. Reese also spelled, "Rees." |
