The Kennedy’s were accused of murdering James Thomas Lowrie. The specifics are not known. Josephus was found not guilty and General and John were hung. John Kennedy is also listed as John Davis. The first trial was held in Marion and then the Kennedys appealed to have the trial moved because they felt the jurors were prejudiced. In the end only John was found guilty. |

Add def: N. A. Kemper. Pla. was convicted by the Caldwell (judge in the case) of several misdemeanors and ordered to pay fines and costs. Pla. was unable to make payment and sentenced to the county workhouse. T. A. Sykes, Wm. Perkins, and J. P. Rhines then delivered several notes to satisfy plaintiff’s costs and obtain his release. Def. later brought suit against said notes and received judgement. Pla. complained that he was then unlawfully re-arrested and placed in a workhouse to work off the debt. |

Plaintiff in error and Alex Hodge were accused of shooting Ike Blair with intent to kill. Blair testified that he was attending a dance given by Robt. Wilson on the farm of Harve Temple when the plaintiff attacked him without provocation. Witnesses testified that it was Blair who first showed a pistol. |

Incomplete case file. File contains a short brief only. Lige Sewell was sentenced to five years for voluntary manslaughter of Charles Plemons, aged 16. Sewell said Plemons threatened him with an axe while they were hauling lumber, & that Sewell shot him in self defense. However, the jury found that Sewell had shot Plemons in the back, alter posing the axe near the body. Murder took place 15 May 1893. Case transcript in ET, Box 2008. State v. Lige Sewell. |

On a gambling raid, the Nashville police arrested 16 men and boys accused of gambling in a room above the Climax Saloon. The police were locked out of the room for "3 or 4 minutes" and found people playing pool, "counters", craps tables, and a poker table Ritter's actually charge was Loitering around Gaming Houses. |

Plaintiff in error was accused of assaulting Columbus (Lum) Smith with intent to commit murder. Smith was at his home eating with his family when the shooting occurred. Shots hit Smith, his wife, and two of his daughters. Smith had an argument with Farris a year prior to the shooting. Farris denies the charges. Casefiles notes that Farris is 68 years old and lives in Caney Spring. Smith's stepson also lived with Farris at the time of the shooting. |

Shelley convicted of "unlawfully and feloniously" having carnal knowledge of his niece, Mary A. Conner, and was sentenced to 5 years. Mary was the daughter of Shelley's half-sister, Nancy. This is the point on which the controversy arose: was incest committed because Mary and John were only half siblings, not whole ones? Court upheld the decision. |
