Lea sued the Knoxville News Sentinel for libel to his damage $100,000. Lea was a publisher for the Nashville Tennessean and President of Southern Publishers Inc. Lea sued the newspaper for accusing him of robbing the public by using his influence as a corrupt political boss to control acts of public officials for his own financial gain.
