Matthews' family ran a filling station "at the intersection of the Jackson and Bolivar road, what is known as the Steam Mill Ferry Road." After midnight on the night of May 31, 1931 a car of men drove up to a neighboring gas station, and before they left fired a shotgun blast at the Matthews' station, hitting the door jamb in which Joe was standing. Dfnt. shot and killed Hugh Gardner, her husband. Marital problems seemed to be cause of the shooting. Dfnt. claimed self-defense, decedent, before he died, claimed she shot him for no reason. Jones was indicted for first degree murder, but the cover says it was second degree. Decedent was listed as Troy Lockhart, shot and killed July 19, 1931. Jones ran a bar of sorts from his home. On the 19th, Jones asserted Lockhart "blackguarded before my woman and kids" the day before. This led to an argument between the men, during which Jones shot Lockhart, the wound eventually killing Lockhart. Housed in 2 folders. |

The Hills: Henry, Lena, Jessie Lee, J. C., Alfred, and John Allen, were sleeping in their home when they were attacked by group of men in the middle of the night. The Hills were African American.The group shot out all of the windows in the home, and fired shots at the family, striking Lena and four-year old John Allen. Hill identified R. C. Melson, Lee Melson, "another gentleman, his cousin, little white boy called Sooner...Will Reid, Tump Givens, and Vincent "Preacher" Comer" in the group. In 4 folders. |

Woods was accused of killing Sarah Boyette in the first degree. Only once was dfnt. listed as Ed Woods, col. Witness stated, Boyette was stabbed in two places and beaten so severely her eye had to be sewn back in, her teeth were missing, and the back of her skull busted. Decedent was African American, too. She was last seen in an argument with dfnt., and leaving along the train rails. Her body was found on the tracks with blood over various rail elements. Housed in 2 folders. |

Indicted for Murder in the 1st, the jury returned a conviction of Involuntary Manslaughter. Martin was accused of killing "Artie or A. H. Gilchrist". Martin was a struggling farmer, and became indebted to Gilchrist, owner and operator of a cotton gin. Gilchrist agreed to settle the debt by a sale of Martin's 18 acres of land. Martin confronted Gilchrist about the picking of a crop, and during the argument shot him. In 2 folders. |

Watson was accused of the murder of Sam Hall. On October 15, 1929, Watson shot Hall twice with a shotgun on land subject to Hall's life estate. Watson was Hall's son-in-law by wife, Lorene. After Watson used Hall's mules the day before, they were a little beat up around the mouth. Hall threatened Watson's life and cursed him. Watson secured a shotgun, and returned to picking cotton. Hall advanced on Watson with something in his hand, Watson retrieved the gun, and fired twice in self-defense. In 2 folders. |

Hickerson was accused of the felonious assault of one Jimmie Sims. At a party at the home of J. J. Sims, a dropped coin led to an argument that ended when Hickerson supposedly used a razor or other sharp object to cut Jimmie Sims across the face leaving a deep cut and eventual scar. Hickerson claimed self-defense, State claimed it was an unprovoked attack. |

It was the duty of the Quarterly County Court to appropriate the funds for the ensued fiscal year and set aside $3600 for salary of pla., which it failed to do. Pla. Sought mandamus against the 38 def. who constituted said court compelling them to appropriate sum of $3600 to pay his salary, $500 to cover expenses of his office, and $300 for warrants. |

The case had been tried three times in the Criminal Court in Hamilton County, resulting in a guilty verdict of voluntary manslaughter. Defendant was convicted on the testimony of his wife, Blanche, the aunt of the deceased (who lived with them). Horn was sentenced to 3 years in the penitentiary. Landers charged with making as assault and battery upon Jonah Henderson by shooting him in and upon the head. The bullet went in the corner of his left eye and came out the right temple, making him blind in both eyes. He was shot in the cherry orchard picking some cherries. The exhibit includes a beautiful illustration of the scene of the crime with cherry trees and a springhouse. Landers was convicted of assault with intent to commit voluntary manslaughter; he was sentenced to 2 years in penitentiary. |

At the time of her death it was stated that Wyatt was not fit to care for his infant son. Wyatt sued for custody of son, claiming the he is being unlawfully restrained by the defendants. |

Defendant is a county judge. I. Marney was married to one Cleve Marney, who was found guilty of cruel and inhuman treatment of the plaintiff and eventually deserted her. She filed for divorce and alimony in a case heard in 1930. C. Marney failed to provide the ordered child support, but the defendant, who presided over the case, failed in his duty to bind C. Marney to an action of the Grand Jury and held the case over with no discretion for the law. |
