Add Pla: William A. Nance and Susan Nance Hamilton, wife of A.J. Hamilton. Add def: Martha J. Nance, John Y. Cooper and wife Margaret J. Cooper. In 1866 land belonging to Andrew Castleman located in the 11 Civil District of Davidson County was equally divided amongst his twelve heirs. In 1893 pla. brought suit complaining that W. L. Nance was falsely claiming ownership of said land. Casefile notes William A. Nance was confined to the State Insane Asylum in Nashville for 16 years prior to the trial. |

The interior of the file noted both men were colored. Complaintant was the son of the defendant, both men went in to purchase a plot of land in "Haslams Plan" on Warren St. Defendant asserted he only wanted the right to quarry for rock on the plot, and afterward would give his share to plaintiff. Plaintiff had recently found his father did not put the deed in both of their names nor signed the land over after quarrying was complete. Complaintant has lived in a house on the plot for 6 years. |

Hickman sold Maury a tract of land from North Carolina land grant #586. Several of these plots of land were sold to Hickman by James Hoggatt. The titles on the land were not perfect, and this suit was filed in order to legally sort out the chain of title filing proper ownership in the court. |

Case appears to revolve around a large acreage of land Jackson owns. |

The city contracted with McEwen several times to quarry stone for the purpose of being crushed for street repair. The plaintiff claims contracts amounting to $2307.85 were obtained and executed, however city only paid $1300.25. Plaintiff sued for balance. Includes details related to the trade of rock excavation--labor, contract negotiations, payment. Exhibit: Two original contracts. Because the city engineer did not personally measure the work, an arbitrator did fieldwork to determine the volume. |

Plaintiffs administrator of Enoch Cunningham, dec. July 1872, Northern sold and conveyed to the deceased an deed for land in Davidson County. The land was $3850 of which $850 was paid in cash and the remaining $3000 was to be paid by promissory notes. Enoch died intestate on May 22, 1874 before he could finish the payments. Northern placed a lien on the land until the rest of the money was paid. |

Ceney Patterson sued and claimed she had taken out a life insurance policy on her brother Eddie Patterson, with her as the beneficiary. Eddie passed away in January, 1895. Sun Life claimed that the policy applications was never completed, so they denied the claim. They also claimed that the plaintiff did not represent correctly how sick Eddie was at the time application was made for the policy. |

Despite words confirming C.W.'s eventual ownership of the last plot, W. L. has made a deed of sale to dfnt., his son-in-law. Housed in 3 folders. |

Plaintiff states that the defendant's business was to makes bets with customers on the rise and fall of certain commodities. Plaintiff complains that his transactions with the defendant were illegal gambling contracts and is now seeking a return of the money he lost. |

Martin Whitford sold David Anderews a cow, a bed, a certain parcel of corn then growing, for $132. However, Whitford had business in North Carolina & asked that the chattel be left in his family's care until he returned. Before taking possession of the land and Chattel, Andrews asked that the deal be broken. Whitford said he destroyed the bond, but then Sawyers sued Andrews to recover the debt on the bond. |

The original bill was filed July 1872. Additional plaintiffs: S. M. Whiteside, Ella McGavock, more+ In 1847 David McGavock conveyed to the NHS a parcel of land for $1,100 for the purpose of a garden for stockholders. After 70 years it reverted back. Located near the McGavock Plan north of Nashville, the land was eventually used as a dance and beer hall. Plaintiffs were heirs and sued to recover the land after 70 years. SEE MT BOX 1102 for 178 pages of the total 283. |

Edward Sanders hired an enslaved man, Abraham, from John Camp, paying with a note for $100. Shortly after Abraham became sick and was not able to work. Abraham went to the house of Miss Hope, where his wife lived. Sanders sued to recover the value of his note. |

The Lawrence's sued for $20,000 in damages for injuries Mary obtained while riding in an omnibus owned by Hudson. Hudson's bus carriage and horses had been left unattended with Mary inside, and the team ran away, turning over the carriage, causing Mary's leg and shoulder to be broken. Mary had hired Hudson's carriage to take her from Nashville to her home on Woodland Street in Edgefield. Testimony describes cultural landscape of area. |
