In 1810 Barton purchased some land in Rutherford County for $500, the title not to be created until the debt was paid in full. However, another man had a right to some of the land and Barton was anxious to have the deed filed. Barton sued so that the entire contract might be cancelled.

Demonbreun leased William Bett's tavern in Nashville. Betts agreed to build Demonbreun a new kitchen for the tavern if Demonbreun leased for ten years. Betts failed to build the new kitchen even though the cost was estimated at $100. Demonbreun estimated his loss at $100 a year for not having a bigger kitchen. The suit sought to settle the dispute.
