Appellants are arguing that, since Crittenden was the most capable partner and he died before execution of the bond, that the sureties should not be held. |

In a previous suit, Frederic Uhl successfully sued Peter Turney and was awarded a judgment of about $300. Greer was his bonded surety. Turney did not pay the judgment, and then died. Greer sued Turney's estate, of which Williams was the executor, in order to settle the debt. |

Hickman sold Maury a tract of land from North Carolina land grant #586. Several of these plots of land were sold to Hickman by James Hoggatt. The titles on the land were not perfect, and this suit was filed in order to legally sort out the chain of title filing proper ownership in the court. |

Trail owed John Hunt money; Hunt gave the bonds to Youree for payment in another matter. As he was indebted to Youree, having general financial difficulty, Trail offered to turn over an enslaved woman, Lydia, aged 30, & her child. The two began a dispute about the debts, & the enslaved woman. Case filed to settle the matter. Names misspelled in transcripts, but correctly noted on case style here. |

In 1812, Wright gave Sullivan a note for the for three hundred bushels salt in partial payment of a plot of land. Later, the two disagreed about the value of the salt, and what the remainder of the debt should be. Suit was filed to settle the transaction. |

Charles Morgan ran a plantation in Kentucky. Jeremiah Morgan, dec. executed a contract to sell half of a plot of land to Charles Morgan. Jerimiah then died leaving a wife, Mary, and heirs Armistead & Susannah. The issue with the land was not settled when Jeremiah died, so this suit was filed to settle the rightful land ownership. In 1810 Barton purchased some land in Rutherford County for $500, the title not to be created until the debt was paid in full. However, another man had a right to some of the land and Barton was anxious to have the deed filed. Barton sued so that the entire contract might be cancelled. |

Martin Whitford sold David Anderews a cow, a bed, a certain parcel of corn then growing, for $132. However, Whitford had business in North Carolina & asked that the chattel be left in his family's care until he returned. Before taking possession of the land and Chattel, Andrews asked that the deal be broken. Whitford said he destroyed the bond, but then Sawyers sued Andrews to recover the debt on the bond. |

In 1807, Winchester filed for ownershp of 300 acres that was supposed to run along property belonging to John Record. A mistake was made in the filing, naming Record as Robertson. Michael Gleaves had interest in this property, then died, leaving it to Matthew. This suit was filed to correct title to the property, and to clarify its locations and boundaries lawfully. |

Edward Sanders hired an enslaved man, Abraham, from John Camp, paying with a note for $100. Shortly after Abraham became sick and was not able to work. Abraham went to the house of Miss Hope, where his wife lived. Sanders sued to recover the value of his note. |

Fischer Lime and Cement Company bought land on the north side of Pontotoc Ave. in the fall/winter of 1923-1924. Tony Sorce is sued for damages and injuries resulting from a car accident involving his wife, his minor daughter, and a friend. The Sorces' car accident resulted from going over a retaining wall built by Fischer Lime and Cement Company on their Pontotoc Ave. property. Sorce alleges it was dangerous. John James obtained a military land grant from North Carolina in 1785. The grant was later assigned to James & John Sloan, now deceased. John pledged to sell the land to Armstreet Stubbelfield. Stubbelfield accused the heirs of the Sloans from executing the sale. Likewise, Pillow was not able to fully execute his purchase of land from the estate either. The case was filed to officially determine the land ownership. |

In 1797, Richard Cook of Granville County, North Carolina conveyed land to William Gwin of Sumner County, TN. The two made multiple agreements concerning multiple parcels of land over the years. John Gwin was William's heir & sued to settle the land matter so that his bequest might be finalized, and the estate settled. |

The Sheriff of Williamson county held a sale of real estate in 1808. The defendants purchased land as a group, each agreeing that the purchase would be for the benefit of each. They also agreed that whatever portion of land was not redeemed by the original owner in twelve months should become the property of the group. |

Washington Hannum lived on a 1,500 acre plot of land which he sold to Mulhearn. There was a dispute concerning the boundaries and value of the land and this suit was filed to settle the dispute. |

Jacob Philips entered a contract with John Burnley that would convey Burnley a lot of land. After making several payments, Philips told Burnley that he could not sell the land, until a grant could be procured from the State of Tennessee. In the mean time, John Haynes offered to buy the land from Philips, paying back Burnley his payment. Suit sought to settle rightful ownership to the land. |

In 1800, Overton obtained a judgment against the heirs of David Allison of $920.14. In his lifetime Allison purchased many plots of land from many people including Landon Carter & Andrew Jackson, but failed to obtain the deeds or register the conveyances. Overton sued: Jane, John, William, & Peggy Allison, and Andrew Jackson to recover the judgment, even if it were to be paid in land. |

William Rutledge had squatted on a portion of the land for some time, then Green Williamson wanted to buy the plot occupied by him, but owned by the Longs. They sold 250 acres to Dooley.Within these sales, the land was further subdivided causing disputes as to land boundaries & ownershp. Case was filed to settle disputes. |

William Thomas obtained a attachment against George Walker, prosecuting for the sum of $500. When Walker failed to pay in full, the sheriff of Wmson County seized his land, which was unfair as the land was worth far more than the debt. Walker sold the land to the Perkinses, but Overton also had an offer to pay the judgement. |

In 1792 Douglas held a bond on John Dawson for an enslaved worker. In return Ephraim offered to give Douglas 640 acres of land to Dawson, so that he might hold a bond on Dawson. They later found that the land might be lost in the deal. The suit was filed to settle the parameters of the agreement. |

Josephine Howard is the administratrix for her sister, Maude Howard, an African American girl. Maude fell through a sidewalk grating at the NE corner of Broadway and Louisiana streets in Memphis and passed away ten months after the accident. Before her death, Maude began a suit against the City of Memphis and after her death, Josephine continued the suit. |

Cahoon, as agent for Jedidiah T. Turner, who had obtained a US patent for a threshing machine, made a contract with Drake, William Christy, & Charles Fishbach to trade land for rights to the patent. The land and patent rights were exchanged, then Turner discovered that he was defrauded by the trade. |
