As his daughter Mary (16) was riding mare owned by her grandpa John Griffith (with whom she lived) on her way to church at Cooper's Chapel, John came from behind cedar bushes, dragged her off mare & beat her with a stick. He had beaten her before & made "improper proposals." At one point, Mary falsified affidavit "to try to restore [her father] to his position in the church."
