Defendant Cooper, a deputy sheriff, was on his way home from teaching school and armed himself to arrest a man named Stuart Johnson he was informed was nearby. Cooper came upon "Randolph" and a quarrel ensued. The defendant claimed he shot and killed Randolph in self-defense. He was charged with carrying a pistol, of which he was acquitted as a legal action that was part of his duty as a officer anticipating an arrest. Cooper was sentenced to 30 days hard labor and $50 for the murder of Rudolph. |
