At that time, law (act 1822, ch. 29) provided that county courts, when making allowances to mother of illegitimate children for their support, allowance shall not for the 1st year after the birth exceed $40, for the 2nd year $30, & for the 3rd year $20. Male child named John Marion Letzinger born September 25, 1846; mother was Elizabeth Jane Letzinger. At one point, trial delayed because witness John Holden had pneumonia. Howard determined to be father of child, but question re: timing of suit. |

Bastardy case. Serena Samsel, a single woman, accused William Jacob Conn of fathering her illegitimate child. John Creach testified that Serena had previously borne two bastard children and that she was known as a tattler who told stories. The witness Almarine [?] Winkle questioned Serena's general character for chastity. Austin Canady admitted to keeping company with Serena and that he "took liberties with her person." |
