Plaintiff received life insurance policy from John Hancock via his employer, American Glanzstoff. Policy provided for payout if policy holder became disabled before age 60. Plaintiff claimed total disability, but defendants refused to pay. American Glanzstoff was subsidiary of the Austrian company Vereinigte Glanzstoff-Fabriken AG. The company produced synthetic silk (rayon). "Glanzstoff" can be roughly translated as "shiny/shimmery stuff."

Honeycutt seeks $1100 in insurance claims due to total disability. While working for Glanzstoff Corporation the plaintiff inhaled noxious gases causing her to faint. Following this episode she became nervous and had constant tremors. This case is very similar to 10 other cases involving the Glanzstoff Co. where employees claim disability following gas poisoning.
