In the original bill, George Mathes sued for $3,000 in damages for injuries sustained while employed at the railway as a day laborer. Mathes claimed negligence on the part of the railway by "knowingly furnishing plaintiff with a defective "tampering pick" that led to the loss of his eye. |

In 1887, a fire occurred destroying the home of Alice S. Barkely, that was located approx. 30 feet from the railroad track near Telford, TN. Alice Barkely sued to recover damages and was awarded $300. The railroad appealed. The engine conductor's testimony provided many details about the operation of a steam engine and the fires required to produce the steam. |

W. D. Weems sued the plaintiff in error for failing to provide adequate notice of the shipment and arrival of a case of boots and other goods. With no delivery arranged from the train station, the goods were stored in the depot, which burned. Weems sued recovery of the cost of the goods ($45.75) and court fees. |

Defendant originally sued for $500 damages. Charged that Gump Investment sold him a 1929 Chevrolet Sedan whose title was under question. Replevin suit brought against Simmons; car taken from him & delivered to A. C. Riddle. After trial & appeal Riddle adjudged the owner of the car. Simmons argued that Gump Investment knew about replevin suit but failed to offer him assistance, thus causing him expense, delay & the loss of his car. |

Plaintiff claimed damages because it was custom for his shipments to sit for a number of days before he sent shipping instructions. The court sided with the Plaintiff. The Railway Company appealed. |

Ike (Isaac Shoecraft) sued for damages due to the loss of two horses totaling $125. In 1889, plaintiff's horses were on the tracks when a train "chased" the horses through a deep cut onto a high trestle from which the horses could not escape safely. Plaintiffs charge the defendants negligently caused injury to the horses due to the construction of the track. |

Plaintiff Jobs sued the defendant railway company for $25,000 in damages for the wrongful death of R. S. Patty while a passenger on the defendant's train. The engineer urged Patty to get upon the engine with him for the purpose of showing Patty his skill at controlling the engine. Another employee neglected to close a switch and when the engine with Patty on it arrived at the open switch section of the tract, he and the engine were derailed and crashed into another train, killing Patty. |

Plaintiff was unaware of existence of tract of land and allowed defendant to handle his business affairs since he was unable to read and write. Defendant sold property and collected funds from deceased's estate. Plaintiff sued defendant for fraud and loss of income that could have been taken out of inherited property. |

Plntff. filed a damage suit for $5000 against Nelson. He alleged that on 7 Aug. 1876 the deft. assaulted him with a club and pitchfork, wounding him so badly that for a time it was feared he would not live. According to Pearson's testimony, the fight erupted when Nelson accused him of not having voted the ticket that he had been given, specifically not having voted for Mathes. When plntff. insisted that he had voted for Mathes deft. called him a liar & attacked. |

Pltf. asserted the dfnts. took a pistol valued between $15-$25,then forced him to ride out on his property where they beat him with clubs "until [he] was jelly". Pltf. was out of work for six months and as of the trial date still had lingering effects of the assault. Simpson claimed "trespass quare clausum fregit" or to recover damages when the defendant has unlawfully and wrongfully trespassed upon the real estate of the plaintiff.
