The plaintiff is complaining to the court that the defendant is concealing his whereabouts in order to avoid paying a past debt accrued through business dealings with the plaintiff. The judge orders the defendant's property to be seized and sold to pay the outstanding debt.

The plaintiff claimed that the defendant owed 21 dollars for a cow. The defendant claimed that he had done work for the plaintiff to pay for the cow.

Plaintiff is 78 year old woman and the wife of 90 year old George Robert Sumpter. Plaintiff complains that the defendant has been living with her in what was supposed to be a temporary arrangement. However, plaintiff states that the defendant now refuses to leave and is a hindrance to the running of her home. Pla. further complains that the defendant convinced her take more than $1,000 out of the bank and hide it in her garage, where he later stole it. Plaintiff sued to recover the money. 2 folders

Edward Jennings owned a valuable tract. In 1846, his son Thomas resided on a portion of the land. Thomas claimed that Edward's other son William H. Jennings owed him $2,200 and that William's portion of the land be used to consume the debt. Case transcript is dated 1848. 12/2/14: Add. 47-page transcript & 3-page opinion added.

Moore administered the will of James Hunter, dec. Plaintiff is sued for $800 for services rendered.

Additional Defendants: William W. Hollingsworth. Defendant Mayes was security for Defendant Hollingsworth on a $24.37 debt Hollingsworth owed to Plaintiff, which debt Mays alleges was to be satisfied by the sale of property securing the debt.

John Hunter executed a writing obligatory in favor of Frederick B. Hunter to pay a sum of money but, when it became due, John failed to pay said sum to Frederick. The note was later sold to Thomas McClain. Others mentioned in transcript: David Bolinger, Frederick Bolinger, William Kincaid.

Plaintiff brought suit against defendant for collection of money owed, and for damages in the amount of $49 in 1839. By the end of litigation in 1843, the Supreme Court at Knoxville had ruled for plaintiff against defendant, with defendant to pay all cost Final cost amounted to $245.34.

Additional defendants: A. L. Greer and Jesse L. Rogers. Plaintiff is the owner of a tract of land containing 5,000 acres known as the Crockett Iron Works tract and described as sitting on Indian Creek in Claiborne County, TN and Lee County, VA. The plaintiff sold said tract of land to the defendant for $20,000, payable in four installments. Plaintiff complains that two payments are delinquent.

Suit for debt due by note. Parties referred the case to arbitration out of court but did so without rule of court, which resulted in cause being discontinued & costs taxed to Plaintiff, who then argued they should not so be taxed to him, Court agreed. Def. appealed that ruling to the Supreme Court.

Filed bill for repayment of property taken from the plaintiff at $12 per month until the balance is paid off.

Def. obtained judgment against pla., but did so with no notice to pla., which led pla. to file this suit, alleging the judgment was illegal & that, had he received notice of the suit that led to the judgment, he had large claims against Def. that would have offset the amount of said judgment. Original judgment was before justice of the peace.

Plaintiff brought suit to recover debts owed by defendant including half the profits of a gristmill over three years time, at $30 profit a year. Court found for plaintiff, who was awarded a judgment of $46.40 Additional plaintiff: William Kincaid.

Plaintiff loaned defendant money to purchase a farm together with 2 others for the purpose of speculation. Plaintiff alleged that defendant never paid him back after the farm was sold and profits divvied.
