Case involves debt for services as a nurse during the Yellow Fever epidemic of 1873.

A. L. Bawcum [Baucum] was adm'x to Nicholas Bawcum, dec. Dispute re jdgmt Houston got against Nicholas in 1865-66, after which Nicholas moved to MO for 5 yrs, left Kennedy in charge of his farm. Kennedy pd on jdgmt. Case asks whether he had authority to do so & whether Nicholas ratified debt before he died. Houston really trying to get Nicholas to pay for horse his son took from Houston during war. Case moved from Decatur to Humphreys County. Location incorrect.

The plaintiff claims that the J. M. Bevley now deceased wrote a note to him for twelve hundred and fifty dollars. The plaintiff wishes to hold the estate held by the defendant by Bevley's will liable for payment of the debts.

Kent and Co. was a partnership comprised of George L. Kent and Benjamin F. Baldwin. A. D. Taylor was a tax collector for the City of Chattanooga. Defendant in error brought suit against plaintiff in error for debt due by account. Case may be related to "Kent & Co. v. A. D. Taylor et al," located in ET 751.

Cocke owed money for a track of land the purchased for the sum of $1,333.33

Toney was hired to do repair work on a steamboat operated by Captain John T. Cartwright.

Bounon also spelled Bonin. Bounon entered into an agreement with Hall to provide the money for the purchase of hogs which Hall would then slaughter and cure. Bounon brought suit claiming Hall failed ship the agreed upon number of hogs, and that much of the meat that was shipped was rotten. Casefile notes that Bounon lives at 426 Walnut St. Philadelphia, PA and Hall in Jasper, TN.

Plaintiff rented land to Ellis McGuire, a black man, who gave a $225 note on Jan. 1873 promising to pay off the note when the 1873 cotton harvest was sold. On the way to the market, Dec. 23, 1873, the 4 bales of harvested cotton were attached by def who who had obtained a judgment against McGuire for the unpaid balance of $71.72 owed on the purchase of a horse during the spring of 1873. Plaintiff relieved the bales claiming delivery of the bales by McGuire. So, McGuire owned no bales for attachment.

J. W. Evans (of Haywood County) and S. E. Johnson (of Shelby County) were partners in the firm of Evans & Johnson, cotton merchants in Memphis. The case is contained in two folders.

The case involves the purchase of land from the firm of Ferguson & Neal. It was consolidated with another case: Joseph R. Williams v. J. B. Kirtland.

Defendant in error brought suit seeking payment of a debt due from the sale of railroad ties. The plaintiff in error charges that many of the ties in question were of inferior quality. Some controversy also surrounds the practice of merchants leaving ties at the railroad yard for the railroad co. to pick up and use. Case file notes this practice often resulted in payments being delayed until after the railroad used the ties, up to a month later.
