Dispute over estate of W. A. Roberts who was murdered in 1901. His wife, Henrietta (who is named as plaintiff in original bill) was declared incompetent by court in 1901. R. L. Burks was admin. of W. A. Roberts's estate. Case in 4 volumes filling entire box.

Opinion only. County unknown. Case originally prosecuted over the title to about 53,640 acres of mountain lands in the counties of White, Cumberland, and DeKalb. At the litigation in this court, it involved 38,000 acres of the same land. Both parties traced their title back to Charles Newman who conveyed the land to Assure Assur, husband of Lydia C. Assur, dec. and mother of defendants.

Jeannette married pla., died w/o children, leaving will w/ambiguous provision: pla. said it gave him entire estate; heirs said it gave pla. only income/profits. SC affirmed chancery court's ruling in pla.'s favor. Opinion marked "for publication".

Court clerk levied taxes on Harrell because he was selling liquor on his steamer and had not taken out a license to carry on such business. Harrell claimed he was engaged in interstate commerce, plying the river between Tennessee & Arkansas. The steamboat "C. H. Hugo" made runs between Memphis & Crittenden County, Ark., for the West Memphis Ferry Company and had kept a bar since the company began doing business.

L. B. McFarland, president of the loan association, also named as plaintiff. N. C. Perkins Jr. also named as defendant. The association, very prosperous until the Panic of 1893, was charged along w/its stockholders & directors, of illegally appropriating its assets as it went out of business. Memphis Appeal Co. claims that the directors & stockholders of the loan association are individually liable for debts to creditors.

The dispute concerns whether they should be taxed, since the tax law specifically excludes butchers from the tax. View Entry 1904 Traders Insurance Company v. Dobbins & Ewing Davidson Insurance Disputes

Opinion only. Defendant in error is a hardware merchant in Columbia Tennessee and is insured by the plaintiff in error. The plaintiff in error refused to cover damages caused by a fire after learning that the defendant in error was storing dynamite. Defendant in error argues that storing a small amount of dynamite is a common practice of hardware merchants.
