McSween attempted to sell land to Charles Kelly & his heirs on the French Broad River, a piece of land that included a ferry & ferry rights. Kelly had willed the land to his heirs, although the land did not belong to him, but to Mr. Brooks. The suit accused McSween of champerty (illegal agreement in which a person with no previous interest in a lawsuit finances it with a view to sharing the disputed property if the suit succeeds). |

Maria E. Logan, formerly Maria Earnest died, leaving her estate to her husband, S. T. Logan. This suit had begun before her death, & continued, trying to recover land belonging to her and her family's estate, that had been taking in adverse possession by others. Earnest family tried to evict the land company and others from the land. Title in dispute but the land company claimed superior title. |

In 1847 Lafferty purchased land from Edmond Collins in Grainger County. The sale was not registered with the sheriff, & the tenants of the land were not notified of the sale. The suit argues that because of these details the sale was void, & land ownership was still rightly Conn's. |
