W. W. Wade was elected Chancellor of the 5th Chancery Division. Wade requested a 90 day leave from the Governor due to physical ailments and requested that the Governor appoint a special Chancellor in his absence. The Governor agreed and appointed R. L. Taylor. During this period Taylor appointed Williams to Clerk and Master of Chancery Court at Carthage. Williams however claims that G. W. Garrett was illegally appointed by Wade and occupies said office. |

In 1873 Brewster was seen hanging around the corner of the courthouse in Sparta close to William Gracy's grocery with a small Smith & Wesson brass cartidge pistol. There was difficulty between Willhite and Meredith and Meredit was Brewster's nephew. Witnesses testified that Brewster fired the gun seven times. |
