Co-defendant Laura Gertrude Hill claims she was coerced into selling a piece of land (a legacy from her parents) when she was less than ten years old. She is now sued to reclaim that property. The additional defendants in the case seem to be two previous owners of the property, now deceased: John Hawthorne and Thomas Jones.

There are 38 additional defendants, individuals or organizations, all citizens of Shelby County. Organizations include Trustees of Cumberland Presbyterian Church, Trustees of M.E. Church South, Woodlawn Lodge of Free & Accepted Masons, and Shelby County. Two additional defendants are a citizen of Louisville, Ky. and one of Arkansas. Case concerns slaves brought into the marriage of G.M. Bartlett and Elizabeth G. Glassgow in late 1846 by the bride. Plaintiff is the sole issue of this marriage.
